Getting started

How does RPN work?

Enter the first number, press ENTER, enter the second number, then press the operation. 3 ENTER 4 + gives 7. There are no parentheses and no equals key: each result waits in the stack, shown above the display, for the next operation.

What do the f and g keys do?

Press f (orange) or g (blue) and the keys change to show their second functions, such as AMORT, NPV and IRR in orange, or the monthly shortcuts in blue. Press the key you want, and the keypad returns to normal.

How do I work out a loan payment?

For a 30-year, $200,000 loan at 6% a year: 30 g n, 6 g i, 200000 PV, then PMT. The answer is −1,199.10, negative because it's money you pay out. Press f x≷y (CLEAR FIN) first to clear the financial registers from an earlier problem.

Where can I learn more?

Open the Help menu (the question mark) for lessons that walk through real problems, and for help with any key. Par follows the classic gold-key keystrokes, so worked examples from finance textbooks and the classic financial calculator handbook work as written.

Settings and memory

How do I switch payments to the beginning of the period?

Press g BEG (the 7 key). BEGIN shows below the display. g END (the 8 key) switches back. You can also use Help › Settings › Payments at Beginning.

How do I use a decimal comma or day-month-year dates?

Open Help › Settings and turn on Decimal Comma or Day-Month-Year Dates. Dates can also be switched with g D.MY and g M.DY.

How do I change how many decimals are shown?

Press f and a digit: f 4 shows four decimals. Par always calculates with the full 10 digits, whatever the display shows.

How do I clear everything?

Open Help › Settings › Clear All Memory. It erases the stack, every register, the cash flows and the program, and resets the settings. Your history is kept.

Is my work saved?

Yes. The stack, registers, program and settings are kept when you close the app, just like a calculator with continuous memory. History keeps your past calculations so you can reuse their results.

Does my history sync between iPhone and iPad?

Yes, when both are signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on for Par. New calculations show up on your other devices within a few moments. The stack, registers and program in progress stay on each device, so one device never replaces work you're doing on another.

Answers that look wrong

Why is my payment or present value negative?

Par uses the cash-flow sign convention: money you receive is positive and money you pay out is negative. A loan you receive is a positive PV, so its payments are negative.

Why does the display show Error 5?

The TVM values can't all be true at once, usually because PV, PMT and FV all have the same sign. Check that money in and money out have opposite signs. The help for each key lists its error codes.

Why does IRR take a moment, or show Error 3?

IRR is found by searching, like on the classic calculator. Error 3 means the cash flows have more than one answer, or none. Key in a guess for the rate, then press RCL g R/S to search near it.
